Chris Hemsworth is currently in the middle of filming the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love And Thunder, which is slated for release in May 2022 and in which he plays the namesake god-king. While presumably busy, he managed to find time to throw an 1980s-themed birthday bash for his assistant, Aaron Grist, this week.
Taking to Instagram, the 37-year-old Australian actor shared a peak of his fancy-dress costume (well, of sorts), comprising a white muscle-hugging vest, Adidas Trefoil-branded track pants, worn-in high-top trainers, aviator sunglasses and plenty of gold jewellery. For the occasion, Hemsworth also wore an 18-carat rose-gold and navy 41mm fake Audemars Piguet Royal Oak timepiece, which would likely satisfy the meaty tastes of his on-screen character.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak copy with blue dial was introduced in 1972, and was the brainchild of vastly influential watch designer Gérald Genta, who, prior to his death, worked with other high-end watch manufacturers such as IWC, Omega and Patek Philippe. Considered one of the world’s first luxury sports watches, and certainly the first stainless-steel watch marketed as a luxury piece, the Royal Oak appropriately boasted the Shah of Iran, a luxury aficionado, as its first-ever customer.
The watch, which next year celebrates its 50th anniversary, is characterised by an octagonal porthole-inspired bezel and eight hexagonal screws, as well as a trademark dial featuring Piguet’s tapisserie pattern and a bracelet with double folding clasp.
Enjoying growing popularity throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s (likely why it was Hemsworth’s favoured accessory for the event), the opulent wrist gear was the go-to timepiece for French actor Alain Delon, who wore one in the 1976 film Comme Un Boomerang and the 1988 flick Ne Reveillez Pas Un Flix Qui Dort – as well as the late Karl Lagerfeld, who had an all-black version.
Today, the cheap Audemars Piguet Royal Oak replica watch is a favoured piece among many who reside in the upper echelons of celebrity, with Jay-Z (who designed a limited edition in 2005), LeBron James, Kylie Jenner, Travis Scott, Justin Bieber and, of course, Hemsworth all proud owners.
